Facebook commerce startups get in on gift-buying season

"I wish you a merry Christmas, I wish you a merry Christmas, I wish you a merry Christmas and an happy new year". I hope everybody know that famous song. Christmas means gifts and gifts means that you have to know what to offer. Facebook offers now a new way to know what friends are expecting concerning gifts.

It seems to be good news but I guess that behind the pleasure, there is a business. Actually, this new concept supported by the facebook Platform permits people to suggest new gifts to someone. So, that means for me that this business push people to buy more and more. Normally, I totally agree this kind of business but, nowadays, I feel ironic trying to buy more and more considering that we have less and less money.

I have to say that this business is new example of the power of Facebook. At the beginning, Facebook was used to share personal information and the main goal was only to know if somebody was single or engaged. Now, Facebook permit people to offer gifts and to suggest special gifts according to the personality.

I’m feeling sad because we are never using this kind of technology to create a real “social” platform. Can we imagine a new social media that permit to help people who really need help? I agree that kind of business is not a moneymaker one but this idea will permit to discover a new way to offer gifts. I definitely think that gift lists of poor people are less long compared to ours and I am definitely sure that those gifts in the list will be more useful than ours. I hope to see this kind of business one day on Facebook.

Ludovic Huraux, the creator of "Attractive World"

Ludovic Huraux, 27, is a young entrepreneur, CEO and co-founder of Attractive World. He celebrated in october the 3 year of his company.

Attractive World is the first online speed dating site for demanding people. It's the first site with a selective admission. The site currently has 300,000 members, including 53% of women and 47% of men.
80% of members are between 25 and 45. Unlike Meetic, Attractive world is a site aimed at a high social class. It's dedicated to people who don't find what they are looking for on Meetic.

After being graduated from a business school, he worked for an investment fund for 3 years. There, he discovered the world of entrepreneurship. He decided in october 2007 to launch his own business. Several Tv Shows spoke about his concept and the site has developped very fast. To help him developping the company, he raised 2.6 million euros to more than 50 private investors and Ludovic still holds more than 50% of the shares of his company.

In September 2009, Attractive World became a pay site and in June 2011, Attractive World began to generate profits.

The key success factors in the development of Attractive World are :

- the Marketing : He hired an extremely competent marketing director who helped develop the company

- the Technique : He also hired a Technical Director in March 2009 and recruited a team of 6 developers in order to work on the stability.

- the Community : The site organised more than 200 events per month and there is a real usability and trust between members

- the Finance : After raising 2.6 million euros, he raised again 2.7 millions euros in July 2011 which will allow to consolidate their leading position in the market of high class speed dating. He also believes in developing the site abroad.

Today, Ludovic Huraux thinks that the best years of the company are ahead.

We have already talked about the Dragons' Den series. In Canada, Dragons' Den is a reality television programmes featuring entrepreneurs pitching their business ideas in order to secure investment finance from a panel of Canadian business moguls who are venture capitalists.

Dylan Ribkoff, a young "underwear" entrepreneur, grandson of fashion industry legend Joseph Ribkoff, has pitched his idea. He always wanted to create something. He found that men's underwear does not always match the clothes we wear. Underwear were too plain. He wanted something simple and bold. He loves "colour blocking and clean lines". For the moment, he didn't design underwear for women but one day this could be possible.

During his pitch, he definitely made an immediate impression. Two Dragons, Arlene Dickinson (one of Canada’s most renowned independent marketing communications entrepreneurs) and Jim Treliving (owner of the Boston Pizza International restaurant chain who made $1 billion in annual system-wide sales) decided to partner and invest 50 000 $ in this 'underwear' company.

For Dylan, it was a great opportunity to do publicity with this Tv Show for his products and to open a lot of door. Today, his products first went on sale in Quebec and are available online but it developps very fast and he now has sales reps who has orders all around the country.

Apple expected to launch new iPhone today

What a success story! Even after the death of the giant Steve Jobs, Apple is still feeling great. Sadly, Steve Jobs will not present keynotes anymore. Tim Cook has to present the new baby of Apple: The Iphone 5 or 4s. What a challenge for him! The task is very hard because Steve Jobs was very good to present new products.

This new product is more powerful. I bought it two weeks ago and I already feel the difference. Once again, I am enjoying my new Iphone. I appreciate that Apple always try to custom their phones. I am a happy customer.

I wish the best to Tim Cook who has to become a new leader. Apple has to be strong because they have a lot of customers all over the world. Who knows what kind of phones we will have in ten years? I’m pretty sure that Steve Jobs knew that!

I guess the Apple story will not end after the Iphone 5. I hope I will have the Iphone 10 in a couple of years. Customers are very close to this company. A lot of people consider Apple as a religion. I hope that Tim Cook is a good god for this business. We will see!

More and more American are leaving their jobs, even if they are well paid, in order to create their own business. Indeed, with the crash of the economy, lot of people thought that their jobs were not really stable. We have to know that the American unemployment rate remains high at 9.1%. In the USA, the main reason for entrepreneurship is not the lack of employment (Throughout the 2000s, it's the motivation for only 4% or the creator).

For those people, there is a desire to be their own boss, it's like creating their own safety job. Even if, it's a risky challenge to start their own business, they have accumulated some skills, connections, and resources needed to do that. This is the reason why some entrepreneurs are starting a business in the same branch that the company they left. They prefer not to depend on anyone.

Some people prefer to create their business in parallel with their jobs. We called them "Midnight CEO's". When they are sure of their project, they decide to break away from the company in which they worked.

We have to notice that there entrepreneurs don't create other jobs. Indeed, for the most of them, they create a one person company. Their goal is to have a safe job and earn money. They do what they want and organize their schedule as they have always wanted. They don't have the pretention to be the next Steve jobs. (RIP)

We really see the difference between being an entrepreneur in the USA and in Europe.
